Silver Baby Hair Brush
A new mum was asked "Are you pleased with your new arrival"? Pleased???, I am "over the moon" she exclaimed. It was on this basis that the products were designed and the collection given its name. This concise range of sterling silver Christening gifts is interesting in that the use of the items develops as the baby grows. This is certain to attract comment from your friends and family.
The sterling silver top of this round hairbrush is complemented perfectly by soft natural bristles. Ideal to gently brush your baby's hair. This is one of the Over the Moon sterling silver baby gifts that can be used for the early years of the baby's life and become a talking point for years to come.
For those who are interested in how we make this brush, a brief description follows from John Campbell. Being silversmiths, we do not actually make the brushes themselves. However we do make the brush-back by turning a piece of maple wood on the lathe. It is then sent to the brush-maker who drills holes in the wood to accept the bristles. These are looped and pulled through the wood using thin wires and then secured on the back surface. The silver part we make by the "spinning" method, coaxing a silver disc over a pre-formed shape called a chuck using a polished steel burnisher. This is done while the disc and chuck are spinning together. The skill of the spinner is to prevent the silver disc from buckling as it comes off the flat plane to form a hollow object.
Next, the silver brush back is punched with the maker's mark, JAC in a triangle, the initials of John Campbell. It is then sent to the London Assay Office where it is tested (assayed) to ensure it is made of at least 92.5% silver. Following a positive result from the laboratory, the remaining hallmarks are burned into the surface of the silver using a laser. This is one of the oldest and best forms of consumer protection and began in the 1400s.
Upon return to the silversmith's workshop, the silver brush-back is polished using 4 different grades of compound. It is then decorated with the moon and star motifs. The silver back is then lapped on to the brush and finally packed into the unusual presentation boxes for dispatch. This entire collection is handmade from hallmarked sterling silver in England, at our Brentwood workshop - made up to a standard, not down to a price.
