The manufacturing process is described as follows. The main rattle body is a sphere with a handle socket and handle. The sphere is made by the spinning method in 2 halves, lapped together in the centre. 'Spinning' is just as it sounds and is a technique of producing round, hollow objects in relatively small quantities on a spinning lathe. The silversmith wraps a flat silver disc around a preformed shape called a "chuck" while it is spinning around and using a burnisher or spinning tool (which is highly polished steel with a long wooden handle), uses this to force the silver onto the chuck. The making process is paused at this stage and the item punched with the maker's mark, JAC in a triangle, the initials of John Campbell. Then follows a visit to the London Assay Office where the silver components are scraped and samples analysed. Providing a positive result is obtained from the laboratory, the remaining hallmarks along with the 'Over the Moon' logo are burned into the surface of the silver using a laser.

The making process continues when the rattle returns to Campbell's workshop where it is finally polished using 4 grades of polishing compound. The silver beads are put inside and the handle glued in place. After a final check, the rattle is placed into its unusual green, satin-lined presentation box. This entire collection is handmade from hallmarked sterling silver in England at our Brentwood workshop - made up to a standard, not down to a price.
