The sterling silver rattle is one of the first items in the collection. In common with the whole collection it has an amusing moon and stars decoration on the sterling silver ball and the handle is in the style of ivory. The manufacturing process is described below. The main rattle body is a sphere with a handle socket and handle. The sphere is made the spinning method in 2 halves lapped together in the centre. Spinning is what it sounds, and is a technique of producing round hollow objects in relatively small quantities on a spinning lathe. The silversmith wraps a flat silver disc around a preformed shape called a "chuck" while it is spinning around and using a burnisher or spinning tool (which is highly polished steel with a long wooden handle) uses this to force the silver onto the chuck. The making process is paused at this stage to allow a visit to the London Assay Office where the silver components are scraped and samples analyzed. Providing a positive result is obtained from the laboratory the hallmarks along with the 'Over the moon' logo are burned into the silver surface.

The making process continues when the rattle returns to Campbell's workshop where it is finally polished using 4 grades of polishing compound. The silver beads are put inside and the handle glued in place. After a final check the rattle is placed into its unusual green satin lined presentation box.
