Silver Baby Rattle - Classic Design
This sterling silver baby rattle has a handmade hall marked sterling silver bell with a simulated ivory handle. Brighten up the nursery with the timeless lustre of sterling silver baby gifts
Sterling silver baby rattles have long been a traditional feature of many nurseries. Often passed down from one generation to the next, they are as durable and functional as they are charming and attractive. A silver baby rattle makes a meaningful gift, one that will surely be treasured for years to come. Handed down from generation to generation. How noice to inherit your Grandmother's rattle.
In years gone by some rattles were constructed with a handle that had inserted into it a smooth piece of stone or bone that was used for the baby to suck upon and teethe. This end of the rattle was known as the gum stick and could be made of rock crystal, ivory, agate, carnelian, mother-of-pearl, bone, or coral, all of which felt cool upon the gums.
In the United States, hollow clay figures shaped like birds or dogs were made with small balls inside that would rattle. These, too were often meant for adults to shake.
Clay is too easily broken and unsafe for a baby. By the 1800s, the famous silversmith Paul Revere and others were making silver rattles that also could be chewed. In the early 20th century, Tiffany's, the famous New York company, made sterling-silver rattles as baby gifts.

How do we make this product? The main method used in the construction of this rattle is "spinning". This is a method of producing round hollow objects in relatively small numbers. Much of the JA Campbell range is produced in this way. The rattle body is spun in 2 parts which are lapped together. Flat silver discs are wrapped around a pre formed shape known as a chuck while it is spinning on a lathe. This task is performed using a polished steel burnisher to move or coax the disc onto the chuck. The skill of the silversmith is to stop the metal buckling as it will try to do as it moves off the flat. There is now a pause in the manufacturing process while the silver bell goes to be hallmarked at the London Assay Office. This is one of the oldest forms of consumer protection. Upon return to the workshop the rattle and handle are now polished in separate stages using 4 grades of polishing compounds until bright and all the blemishes are removed. The handle is then glued in place and the rattle is packed into a distinctive JA Campbell presentation box.
