Silver Candle Snuffer
A sterling silver candle snuffer from the JA Campbell 'Classic' collection with cut card decoration and turned mahogany handle. An interesting talking point when entertaining with friends and family and an indicator of your status and knowledge of arts and crafts and the finer things in life. All very well if you only have one candle to put out but with more, it gets messy blowing or squeezing them out, with this candle snuffer, it is a joy to extinguish them!
You can spoil yourself and buy one for your own use or as a special present for someone close. It is also very suitable as a silver wedding present, a birthday present, a corporate gift or incentive gift. It can even be made in gold for the very special golden wedding present. The snuffer can be engraved with a date or initials of your choice to further personalize the gift.
This particular silver candle snuffer is a faithful reproduction circa 1720 from when silver was, for a short time by law, of a higher standard than today. This reproduction is made from 925. Correspondingly the pure alloy (Britannia silver 958) was softer and fitments such as the handle socket needed strengthening. A decorative cut card reinforcing patch was added to double the thickness in areas of stress or areas of possible weakness, such as handles etc.
The manufacturing process for this item is interesting to hear and is described by Master Silversmith John Campbell. It is made from 5 components. The body which is made by the 'spinning' method in 7 operations. The finial which is cast by the 'lost wax' method. The cut card reinforcing plate is pierced from sheet and soldered to the body using 'hard' silver solder. The silver handle socket, again, cast using the lost wax method. Both components are again pre polished before the handle socket is soldered to the body at precisely the correct angle to ensure the handle end touches the table.
The mahogany handle has been turned on the lathe from a long square section of baton. Although JA Campbell do most of their wood turning in-house, this item is an exception and is made by an external wood turning company.
The maker's mark is now punched into the surface, JAC in a triangle, which is the registered mark of JA Campbell and the initials of John Campbell. It is now time for a visit to the London Assay Office which has been in Goldsmiths' Hall since the 1400s. Here each of the 5 components is sampled and 'assayed' - tested. Providing all the components are on or above 925 parts silver out of 1000, the remaining hallmarks are punched into the surface of the silver using a stake inside to support the item. The remaining 75 parts per 1000 of the metal alloy are pure copper. This is a centuries old mix which hardens the otherwise too soft pure silver. This is enough copper to harden but not discolour.
Upon return to the silversmith's workshop, the slight dent from the punching of the hallmarks is removed by 'planishing' with a small hammer. This item is now polished using 4 compounds, ending with jeweller's rouge which imparts the high lustre for which silver is well known. Finally it is ultrasonically cleaned, the mahogany handle fixed in, wrapped and boxed.
The design features and quality in every item made by craftsmen at JA Campbell are unique. In the unlikely event of damage, we provide a full repair service. You can be assured that all JA Campbell products are made up to a standard, not down to a price. Nothing leaves the Brentwood workshop until Master Silversmith John Campbell is completely satisfied.
