Silver Cocktail Long Jug Stirrer
A sterling silver long jug stirrer with twisted silver wire stem and a disc blade. The disc has the double turned line Campbell signature decoration and terminates with a silver ball finial. The twisting of the silver has the effect of hardening the stem to minimize accidental bending whilst also enhancing the decoration.
The manufacturing process is described below: It is the same for both the highball drinks stirrer and the juice jug stirrer, the only difference being the length of the stem. They consist of 3 components, the round disc/paddle, the twisted stem and ball finial.
The round disc is punched from silver sheet which is made by our supplier Cookson Precious Metal. On arrival it is held in the lathe and a pair of decorative lines turned into the surface. As with all our silver it is the UK standard silver, 925 or sterling silver as it is known, and is an alloy of silver and copper (92.5% pure silver and 7.5% pure copper) The addition of copper is not to cheat but to harden for without the copper addition the pure silver would be too soft to be practical. If one held a piece of pure silver and a piece of standard silver and bent them both it would be very obvious which was the harder.
The twisted wire stem: this comes to us again from Cookson as straight and is twisted in house in long lengths to a specified twists per inch. This twisting also has a hardening and strengthening effect. The wire is cut to the appropriate length for the item being made.
The silver hollow ball finial, also supplied by Cookson.
Assembly: First the stem is soldered to the ball finial and then to the flat disc/paddle.
At this stage the article is punched with the makers mark, JAC in a triangle, the initials of John Campbell. It is then taken to the London Assay Office to be scraped and tested. Once a positive result has been received from the laboratory confirming that the article has been made with metal at least 92.5%, pure silver the remaining hallmarks are punched into the surface. This independent hallmarking process began in the 1400's and is one of the world's oldest and most secure forms of consumer protection. Upon arrival back at our workshop, the hallmarks are inspected and 'set', that is to remove the dents put in by the punching process. Following this the JA Campbell name punch is applied to the disc and the polishing process begins. Using 4 different grades of compound the item is polished to the high lustre for which silver is known. It is then ultrasonically cleaned, dried and packed into presentation boxes.
