Silver Paper Knife or Silver Letter Opener
Silver handled paper knife or letter opener for the person who has nearly everything. It is mounted on a solid hallmarked sterling silver rod handle. The handle has a double line motif which is the signature design theme of the JA Campbell, contemporary, Appetite collection. It has a functional stainless steel blade with a narrow end so it enters the small un-glued corner of the envelope easily before the cutting is started. It is made in Sheffield for quality and reliability.
This silver-handled paper knife or letter opener on first consideration does not seem an important item of desk furniture but having used one regularly, I find it an essential tool with which to open my mail. On occasions when it has become 'mislaid' and another implement has to be used, a feeling of frustration abounds.
This knife would make an ideal, sterling silver, men's gift or sterling silver wedding present. If the occasion is a golden wedding, then the handle can be gold plated or indeed actually made of gold. As the sterling silver handle of the knife can be engraved, it is also very suitable for a corporate or incentive gift. A sterling silver engraved paper knife or letter opener could be something that is passed from generation to generation. How nice to be able to use Grandad's letter opener!
For those interested in the creation of this paper knife, a brief description follows: this product comes to us as a raw stamping as we do not have a press large enough to forge its blank. Initially blanks are produced from thick silver sheet. These blanks are then put into a top and bottom die and struck to form the flattened diamond cross section of the blade area. They are then fettled and linished ready for hallmarking.
At this stage in the making, the silver rod handle is punched with the JA Campbell makers mark (JAC in a triangle) and then sent to the London Assay Office for testing of each and every component. Only if all the components prove to be better than 92.5% are the hallmarks punched into the surface while being supported on a steel stake. The English hallmarking system is one of the oldest and best forms of consumer protection and dates back to the 1400s.
When they arrive back from the hallmarking process the JA Campbell name punch is applied. The hallmark punching process can cause slight distortion which needs to be rectified before going to the polishing shop. The polishing process uses 3 different grades of compound to bring them to the brightness associated with silver. They are then ultrasonically cleaned, rinsed, inspected and packed into fitted presentation boxes for stocking or dispatch.
