Silver Single/Double Drinks Measures
A sterling silver double and single spirit measure, handspun and gold plated inside both ends, incorporating a ring handle for easy and comfortable use.
For those interested in how we make the item a description follows:
It is made from 3 components, 2 spun and 1 wire handle.
Spinning: This is an ancient method that is still suitable today for the making of round hollow objects from sheet material in relatively small quantities. This method is lso used by other industries, saucepans and lamp fittings are often made this way. It involves taking a disc of sheet material, in this case silver, and coaxing it (while it spins rapidly) over a preformed chuck or former, screwed on to a spinning lathe and using a polished steel 'burnisher' with a long wooden handle which is held against the body and under the arm of the spinner/silversmith to provide push.
The JA Campbell signature 'double turned lines' decorate the centre section. This product is quite time consuming for the spinner/silversmith to make with the numerous draughtings necessary to bring the 2 hollow components up from flat silver blanks to what is almost open ended tube. Once they have been spun they then need to be soldered together to complete the body.
The ring handle has been made coiling round section wire around a parallel rod like a spring. It is then slid off the rod and each section sawn from the coil. The 2 ends are then bent together and the joint soldered together using hard silver solder. The body and the ring are then pre polished, cleaned and the handle is attached using easy silver solder.
At this stage the article is punched with the makers mark, JAC in a triangle, this is the registered mark and initials of founder John Archibald Campbell. It is then taken to the London Assay Office to be scraped and tested. Once a positive result has been received from the LAO laboratory confirming that the article has been made with metal at least 92.5%, pure silver the remaining hallmarks are punched into the surface. This independent hallmarking process began in the 1400's and is one of the world's oldest and most secure forms of consumer protection.
Upon arrival back at our workshop, the hallmarks are inspected and 'set', that is to remove the dents put in by the punching process. Following this the JA Campbell name punch is applied to the base.
The polishing process can now begin. First using coarse compound moving up to medium and lastly a fine compound until the high polish associated with silver is achieved. 4 grades are used and around 20 different operations employed. The insides of each end are then gold plated. A final inspection takes place before packing into fitted presentation boxes.
