Silver Slender Candlestick
This slender hallmarked sterling silver candlestick is part of the 'Appetite' collection from JA Campbell Silversmiths. It has the double line motif which is part of the signature design theme of the contemporary 'Appetite' collection.
Candelabra branches are also available to push fit into the top of these sticks to convert to 2 or 3 light candelabra.
The slender sophistication of this silver candlestick shows the inherent qualities of hall marked sterling silver at its best. Plain surfaces and curvaceous clean lines create that elegant simplicity that will delight. 'To delight a customer' is something Designer John Campbell aims to do with every item that leaves his workshop.
For those people who are interested in how we make these candlesticks in our Brentwood workshop a description follows. The 'spinning' method is used for the top and bottom components and seamless drawn tube for the centre stem. The 'spinning' process is quiet an old one that is most suitable for making round hollow objects from sheet material in relatively small quantities. Lamp shades and kitchen utensils are often made this way. A disc of silver sheet is 'spun' over a preformed shape known as a 'chuck' while clamped together and rotating on the lathe. The tool used to do this is a rounded polished steel burnisher held in a long wooden handle and tucked under the arm of the silversmith. With sweeping strokes he coaxes or wraps the disc which will require 'annealing' as it work hardens. The technique of the process is to prevent the disc from buckling, folding and cracking as any flat sheet material will try to do. On completion the spun components are 'lapped' together and soldered onto the central tube/column or stem which has been flared at each end to align with the curves of the top and bottom spun components.
At this stage in the making the items are sent to the London Assay Office for testing of each and every component. Only if all the components prove to be better than 92.5% are the hallmarks punched into the surface while being supported on a steel stake. The independent English hallmarking system is one of the oldest and best forms of consumer protection and dates back to the 1400s.
The items are then returned to the silversmith's workshop where they are polished using 4 grades of compound to remove all the spinning lines, file marks, blemishes and scrape marks caused by the Assay Office tests.
After the last polishing stage all the items are ultra sonically cleaned and finally packed into presentation boxes for dispatch.
In order to show retailers the quality difference John Campbell places a set of 3 candlesticks on the shop floor, puts a flat board across the top of them and climbs on it! Although John is only 11stones in weight it proves that these silver candlesticks are of exceptional quality.
Candlesticks were probably the most frequently used item of silver before the advent of electricity and so a huge number were made and also in a very wide range of styles. Today there are many styles still available; it is purely down to individual tastes.
