Silver Tea Caddy Spoon
This handmade hallmarked sterling silver tea caddy spoon is part of a matching tea and coffee set from the 'Appetite' collection of J A Campbell silversmiths. An English tea set handmade in our Brentwood workshop by Master Silversmith John Campbell and his team of craftsmen.
The silver caddy spoon is made from 2 components, the bowl/body is made from sterling silver sheet and punched into a male and female die. The handle is made the lost wax casting method bearing the double line J A Campbell signature theme. The 2 components are joined together using easy silver solder.
It is now time for a visit to the London Assay Office which has been in Goldsmiths hall since the 1400's. Here the 2 components are sampled and 'assayed' - tested. Providing the components are on or above 925 parts silver out of 1000 the hallmarks are punched into the surface of the silver using a stake inside to support the item. The remaining 75 parts per 1000 of the metal alloy are pure copper. This is a century's old mix which hardens the otherwise too soft pure silver. This is enough copper to harden but not enough to discolour.
Drinking tea, afternoon tea, traditional English occasions which you can turn into a celebration by using English sterling silver.
If you take your tea seriously this silver tea caddy spoon is the starting point. Add a silver tea caddy, a silver sugar basin, a silver milk jug, a silver cake stand for the freshly made scones, a silver preserve bowl for the homemade strawberry jam and a sterling silver butter dish. Use the large silver salver from the J A Campbell 'Appetite' collection and your afternoon tea table will nearly be complete.
Also part of the same collection and to serve the tea, a tea strainer completes the set. All you need now are your guests!
An English handmade silver tea set will delight you and be a wonderful traditional set to pass from generation to generation. Queen Victoria is said to have preferred her tea from a silver pot, so the tradition is a royal one!
