Silver Adam Style Claret Jug
This Sterling Silver & Crystal Claret Jug, in the style of Robert Adam c.1760, comprises a sterling silver top with hinged cover thumb piece and sterling silver base with a crystal body in the centre. For strength and stability, the top and bottom sterling silver components are joined together with a bead decorated handle. The sterling silver bead wire feature is used throughout this Claret Jug to decorate and strengthen. The skills required to create a sterling silver Claret Jug of this complexity are only acquired after many years of experience at the bench. At JA Campbell, the person capable of producing this item is Founder, Designer and Master Silversmith John Campbell. Nothing produced at JA Campbell Silversmiths leaves the workshop without his seal of approval. Mouth-blown English crystal is used for making the body of this Claret Jug, uniquely made by the Master Glassblower and his team of supporting craftsmen. In the rare event of a mishap, we can replace the crystal body.

Just pour the beads inside together with a little washing up water, shake them around for a few minutes, remove and drain the pellets using the strainer provided and use as often as necessary.
The production method for these claret jugs is described: this is one of the most labour intensive and complicated pieces of the 'Classic' collection. "I would rather make 20 chalice claret jugs than 1 Adam" says founder John Campbell. Each one has 17 different components; 4 spinnings, 4 pieces of decorative bead wire, 4 lost wax castings, I hinge, 1 piece of sheet, 1 crystal body and 3 tiny pieces of tube. Around 15 hours of labour are used to create 1 claret jug. Of the 4 'spun' items, 2 create the top of the body and 2 the base. Of the decorative bead wire, 1 is to decorate and strengthen the top of the body, the next one down to finish the area between the top and the crystal body and the next one down to strengthen and finish the area between the crystal and base and the bottom one again to strengthen, decorate and terminate.
The cast items: the billet or thumb piece on the cover and the handle, top and bottom.
Silver hinge: to facilitate the opening of the cover.
Crystal body: mouth-blown for us by Dartington Crystal in an open-and-shut, cast iron mould. This has a square stump added while the body is hot and plastic. It goes inside the silver base to be held in place by Plaster of Paris.
Silver tube items: these tiny pieces of tube are soldered, 1 on to the bottom of the handle and 2 on to the top of the silver base. They will be joined together with a nickel pin. This is to connect the top silver component with the bottom to make the whole unit strong.
Silver sheet item: this is for the cover which is cut to an oval template and pressed in a male and female die to form a dome into the centre and give it a sweeping profile to the elevation view.
When these components have been spun, cut and fitted, they are soldered together to form 4 sub-assemblies. At this stage, they are punched with the maker's mark, JAC in a triangle, the full initials of John Campbell. They are then sent to the London Assay Office to be tested and the remaining hallmarks punched into the surface. This is one of the oldest and best forms of consumer protection dating back to the 1400s. The items are then returned to the silversmith's workshop where they are polished, using 4 grades of compound to remove all the spinning lines, file marks, blemishes and scrape marks caused by the Assay Office tests. At this stage, the crystal body is set into the silver base with Plaster of Paris and once dry the top component is fixed in the same way. The whole jug is then washed to remove all traces of plaster and then dried. Nickel pins are then pushed into the cover hinge and the base fitting. It is finally inspected and packed into a presentation box.

Claret originates from the old French 'clairet' and is a registered name in the E.U. to describe a red Bordeaux wine. The term Claret however is little known in France today outside International dining situations. The present style of Bordeaux wine is a deep full red. This has not always been the case. It once resembled a 'rose' hence the French 'clairet' meaning 'pale'. Red wines are improved greatly by decanting from the bottle. This process will develop the taste, improve the clarity by taking out the sediment allowing the wine to breathe after imprisonment in the bottle. It will also add a substantial amount of theatre.
