Silver Baby Beaker

A new mum was asked "Are you pleased with your new arrival"?  Pleased???  I am "over the moon" she exclaimed. It was on this basis that the products were designed and the collection given its name.

This concise range of sterling silver baby gifts is interesting in that the use of the items develops as the baby grows and is certain to attract comment from your friends and family. Taking their first drink from a sterling silver beaker is a big step and what will also delight your baby is looking at the amusing moon and stars motif on the sides of this sensibly-sized sterling silver beaker. Silver is known to possess health properties.

For those interested in how we make this beaker, we start by employing the spinning method which is an old method of producing hollow objects in relatively small quantities on a lathe. In olden times, the lathe would have been a treadle bow type which revolved clockwise and then anti clockwise. Today it is powered by an electric motor. A silver disc is wrapped around a pre-formed chuck while the lathe is spinning and using a burnisher (a highly polished steel tool with a long wooden handle) to move the material. This is quite difficult as the flat silver disc tries to buckle as it moves off the flat and the skill of the silversmith is to stop this happening. Several anneals (making the material soft by heating to red hot) are necessary as the silver work hardens. It takes 6 spinning operations before the beaker is finished.

Next the item is punched with the maker's mark, JAC in a triangle, the initials of John Campbell. It then takes a trip to the London Assay Office where the beaker is scraped and the sample tested to ensure it is more than 92.5% pure silver. After a positive result, the remaining hallmarks are laser burned into the surface.

Upon return to the silversmith's workshop, the silver beaker is polished using 4 different grades of compound. It is then decorated with the moon and star motifs and finally packed into the amusing and unique presentation boxes for dispatch. All the sterling silver collection is handmade from hallmarked sterling silver in England at our Brentwood workshop - made up to a standard, not down to a price.

The "Over the Moon" sterling silver Christening gift collection consists of 10 items and has a range of prices that will suit several members of the same family. Ideal to build a matching collection. This range of sterling silver baby gifts can be engraved with names and/or dates which will personalize the gift and mark the occasion.
